Weagle Bowl 2016

Daphne Dukes
Daphne Dukes reporting!
Hello sports fans! Welcome to the Weagle Bowl results show with me, Daphne Dukes!
What a day it was! 4 gruelling games of Blood Bowl in the course of one day, this gave the coaches a real chance to show their stamina and prove they deserved the top spot!
Even the destruction of the Old World didn’t stop 12 brave coaches from entering teams, each one eager to prove they were the best!
The competitors were:
  • David Lloyd (Squaresheep) – The Scaly Creeps (Lizardmen)
  • Andrew Laing (Mr_Frodo) – Let it Go (Norse)
  • Richard Langford (Hexwraith69) – Badland Marauders (Orcs)
  • Paul Jones (PaulJones82) – Scabbyeye Scramblers (Orcs)
  • Nick Kealy (Knowmad) – Tiger Wasps (Dark Elves)
  • Sean Hassey (EmBeth) – Tequila Shots (Lizardmen)
  • James Slater (Besters) – Little Expectation (Chaos Dwarf)
  • Simon Cass (VarekUK) – The Irony Maidens (High Elves)
  • Gareth Francis (Grimthorn) – Evergreen Invaders (Wood Elves)
  • Gareth Griffiths (greymurphy42) – M.L.S All-Stars (Nurlge)
  • Sam Griffiths (scs.sam) – The D.R.S.E (Wood Elves)
  • Steve Chambers (dontcallmeflossy) – Who’s ya Deady? (Undead)

Round 1

Round 1 Underway!
Round 1 Underway!
With all coaches accounted for and the pre match shows completed (there’s nothing better than elf cheerleaders!) it was time for the first round to begin!
The open games of the tournament were brutal! 5 players ended their Blood Bowl careers permanently much to the amusement of the crowd who were keen to get involved!
The Marauders Troll wasn’t in the best form as he kept getting knocked down (although sources close to the Marauders have said this may be a tactic to get more pay!) The Evergreen Invaders also appeared to have brought the wrong playbook ad they were beating up the Nurgle Team! I hoped they washed their hands afterwards!
After the dust had settled Little Expectation had defied their own team name and taken an early lead, with a statement game against The Scaly Creeps, beating them 3-0 and inflicting a horrific 5 casualties! The Evergreen Invaders had also had a strong first game putting them only one point behind!
round-1

Round 2

I'm not standing up until I'm paid more!
I’m not standing up until I’m paid more!
The second round saw Little Expectation take on The Evergeen Invaders while in a match that was more akin to mud wrestling than Blood Bowl The Irony Maidens hosted The D.R.S.E, and yes, the keen eyed amongst you will have noticed that D.R.S.E isn’t their actual team name, and it’s not for me to judge what Wood Elves get up to in their spare time but I’m not reporting it!
At the other end of the table The All-Stars took on the Scramblers while the two Lizardmen teams squared off in a mirror match, one commentator was heard to say it was like watching an old Godzilla movie as giant lizards smashed into each other!
It looks like the reports of the Marauders Troll holding out for more pay were correct with him spending a full 4 downs laying on the pitch! The Tiger Wasps also showed how good elves can be with one of the team performing a perfect interception despite being surrounded by 6 Orcs!
After the second round Who’s Ya Deady? Had managed to sneak past Little Expectation while the Invaders had dropped to 4th behind D.R.S.E, meanwhile the ScabbyEye Scramblers looked firmly in line for the woken spoon…
round-2

Round 3

The penultimate round saw Who’s ya Deady? take on Little Expectation while the two Wood Elf teams squared off!
The Undead vs Chaos Dwarf match saw the two teams grind each other down, the issues for the Dwarves is that undead don’t get tired and despite a Ghoul learning the hard way why you don’t try to stop a charging centaur the stunties lost 2-0.
In the Wood elf grudge match D.R.S.E proved to be the better team on the day winning the match 4-3, however the Invaders took home to moral victory as they inflicted more casualties! The crowd even decided to get involved at one point rushing the pitch!
Once again the ScabbyEye Scramblers round themselves rooted to the bottom of the table as they suffered a loss to the scaly Creeps.
round-3

Round 4

In the last round there was all to play for with any of the top 7 teams technically able to walk away with the trophy, however in reality it was going to be a clash between the D.R.S.E and Who’s Ya Deady?
At the bottom of the table the two Orc teams squared off, both trying to avoid being the first team to take home the wooden spoon!
In the end the Undead couldn’t match the pure speed of the Wood Elves allowing D.R.S.E to capture the win, and with a massive 15 touchdowns across the event they also claimed that crown. Who’s ya Deady? didn’t go home empty handed though as their performance allowed them to hold onto the runner up spot as well as claiming the award for the most violent team with 12 casualties inflicted!
In the duel for the wooden spoon it was 0-0 until late in the second half the ScabbyEye Scramblers ended up with the ball in range of the Marauders end zone, in what felt like an eternity the Orc stood there as if confused by what was happening before hearing the coach screaming ‘Run you fool!!’ with that the Scramblers scored their first touchdown of the Weagle Bowl and secured victory over the Marauders!

The Longest (Demo) Day

The past two weekends have seen the Devil Pig Demo Team from The Aftermath Gaming club take to the roads. The first show was the Hereward Gaming show based in Peterborough on the 4th September and the team consisted of myself (Lee) Asa and Leon.
The show was easy to find and situated in a really nice venue, finding our table was easy and we were soon greeted by a show organiser. As this was our first ever demo as a team we wanted to see how out plan worked out, the thought of a L type shape for our table layout was what we wanted to achieve so we could have to participation zones and a display area in the centre. We soon set up the tables, put together the clubs newly purchased display board and set about laying out the gaming mats and components we would need for the day. Happy with how it looked we grabbed our complementary coffee and waited for the doors to open.

There wasn't a huge scrum when the doors opened but more of a steady build up, my first customer was a young lad with his grandparents, time to put my rusty demoing skills to the test! I soon found my flow and relaxed into the role, the first happy customer, he loved the game and wanted his grandparents to buy it for him there and then. As we weren't selling the game, he was handed one of our nicely printed Heroes of Normandie cards and given advice on where he could purchase the game. Myself and Asa soon found ourselves with a number of participation games but with enough time to talk in between on how things could be changed for Colours in reading which we knew was going to be huge and a different experience altogether.
Sometimes people just wanted to talk about the game or stand and admire our display, I found myself often talking not only about Heroes of Normandie but also about Devil Pig Games, the artwork of the game and other titles such as Kharnage and the future Kickstarter HON card game. Asa acknowledged my "gift of the gab" as he called it and I must say I enjoyed talking to people about the game just as much as I did explaining it.
The day soon went and Asa concluded the event with a visit from the same young lad that I had started the day with, he loved the game and came back for another go. We rewarded his interest with a free character which seemed to make his day. We packed up in approx 20 mins and started the journey home.
Our second show was Colours based at Newbury racecourse on the 10th September and the team consisted of myself (Lee) Asa and Mark. I woke from my slumber at 4am to get ready, pack up the gear and wait for Mark and Asa to collect me at 5am. We packed the car in the dark which was challenge number one and set off to get at the show for a 9 o'clock set up.
Colours is a show that none of us had been to before so we had no idea what to expect, all we knew was that it was situated over three floors and we were on the second level. Colours is considered one of the largest shows in the country so we prepared ourselves for what could intentionally a really busy day, it was!
We found the venue, parked up and carried out equipment to our tables, Asa had the idea to change the table layout into an upside down /\ shape. This meant that the display board would stand at the point and the two table that created the /\ would form a nice welcoming open space, it was a perfect design and worked brilliantly.
It was all a bit bizarre, it seemed that one minute I was standing in a calm room looking out the window taking some photos and the next minute I turned around and our level was full. It didn't take long before both tables where in action and it stayed like this for the remainder of the day.
It was great to see both existing players of the game as well as those that had never heard of Heroes of Normandie come over and talk to us. Some people just wanted to ask rules queries, others wanted a full game and others came to ask about Kharnage and the new Kickstarter.
One thing that stood out for me was the diversity of the audience, young, old, male and female, These are games for everyone!
What I did notice when walking around having a break was that we where the only gaming club demo team promoting a companies products in an official capacity. It seems like all the other clubs where there purely demoing a game instructed by their club. Our stand was colourful, enticing and full of laughter and smiles.
The day ended and we made our way to the accommodation, orders some food and had a pint, upon reflection we think that we have pretty much nailed it. We have out table structure, rotate demo mats and will be introducing the Commonwealth forces to future shows. At both shows we had a product showcase where we could show examples of punch boards, scenario sets and let people see the contents first hand.
We are great fans of Devil Pig Games and with Kharnage on the horizon as well as the card game and who knows what else we are really proud to be classified as their official UK demo team. We feel we have introduced the game and company to a wider audience as well as support existing players with ideas for scenarios and multiplayer games like out large all day game we held recently.
Plans are already under way for next year and bookings are being made, as a club we have more ideas for large days games and will certainly be looking at a tournament.
For more information on Devil Pig games visit their website and Facebook page and our own Fan page Devil Pig Games Fanatics.

Cambridge Carnage 4 - Cambridge 10th September 2016

The EATBATS team have never disappointed me thus far with their events and the latest instalment was no exception.   Held at ARU the venue suits gamers perfectly.  Plenty of space for all those ripped abs to get by, clean toilets (other venues take note) and easy access to grub.  The cakes provided by the WAGS were a lovely touch and timings worked well.

As a doubles event this last point can be tricky as you and your opponent cogitate over what to charge, what to hex or what to shoot, and the 6 turn game was in jeopardy do to these discussions.  Note to doubles entrants - bear this in mind when prepping for events.

As to the event itself, here are the results;

VP's TP's

2 Paul Godbold / Tony Hayle 1565 44

18 Ollie Fox / Ben Mardle 0 0

Most sporting - The Essex Welsh duo - Jon & Alex
Best Painted - Lee Portingale and his amazing Lizardmen
Best combined - Rob & Colin

The top three positions are perhaps not entirely unexpected, with tourney veterans bringing home the bacon again.  What was nice to see however was the mix of old and new faces at this event.  The eagle eyes among you will also notices the number of ladies present - a 300% increase on most events.  The new faces present regardless of gender added a refreshing level of intrigue to the build up and disproved the nonsense spouted by some that 9th would wither in the vine with the introduction of AoS.

Regarding the tourney build up - the punditry was hilarious.  There is all too little of this these days at events and I would certainly like to see more in the future!
